Pavilion Books Commissioning Editor Cara Armstrong has acquired North-london based chef Hasan Semay’s (a.k.a Big Has) debut cookbook ‘HOME’ from Grace O’Leary at Independent Talent Group 360.

The book will publish on 2 June 2022 and showcases Has’ signature style of robust, accessible and beautiful cooking peppered with influences from his North Cypriot heritage and inspiration from his time spent in professional kitchens.

A graduate of Jamie Oliver’s 15 program, Has has spent the last ten years in and out of restaurant kitchens perfecting pasta at Palatino and grilling meat at Sardine. He believes that ‘food is for everyone, no matter where you come from’, and his debut cookbook will focus on the sense of community that cooking and sharing food creates – from delicate oxtail agnolotti to jerk pork neck and pickles, this is the sort of food that begs to be shared. His no-nonsense approach to cooking and his BBQ Sunday Sessions series on YouTube regularly brings his online community together for masterclass sessions and delicious recipes.

Pavilion Books commented:

“We are so proud to be publishing Has at Pavilion. He is a hugely talented chef and writer, the way he speaks about food and teaches you to engage with ingredients and the cooking process is totally unique and his recipes speak for themselves in their flavour and personality.”

Has sad:

‘This book is just about food. Nothing flashy, no expensive equipment and gizmo’s. It’s entirely about flavours and understanding. Everything I learnt in kitchens or dishes I really enjoyed eating I’d always perfect at home or make for the family. Food in its entirety is more than just filling your stomach; it’s about stories, history, those shared moments.’

HOME by Big Has will be published by Pavilion Books on 2 June 2022. Hardback, £14.99.

THE KING WHO BANNED THE DARK & THE LAST TREE

BY EMILY HAWORTH-BOOTH

MEET A KING WHO BANNED THE DARK OR IMMERSE YOURSELF IN AN UPLIFTING ECO TALE ABOUT SAVING THE LAST REMAINING TREE ON EARTH

‘A timely and inspiring parable’ – The Guardian

‘Ultimately celebratory, and beautifully executed with soft pencil crayon drawings, including comic-strip frames, it shows how much a simple story can convey’ – The Sunday Times

‘Emily Haworth-Booth is fast becoming the queen of the cautionary tale… Stylishly delivered, The Last Tree warns of the perils of taking from the earth, endlessly and greedily and challenges those in power to make the changes that are so desperately needed right now… A thought-provoking depiction of the ripple effects of seemingly small actions.’ – The Little Literary Society

Once upon a time a group of friends were seeking a place to call home. The desert was too hot, the valley was too wet and the mountain was too windy.

Then they found the forest. It was perfect. The leaves gave shelter from the sun and rain, and a gentle breeze wound through the branches.

But the friends soon wanted to build shelters. The shelters became houses, then the houses got bigger.  All too soon they wanted to control the environment and built a huge wooden wall around the community.

As they cut down the trees, the forest becomes thinner, until there is just one last tree standing.

It is down to the children to find a solution.

SHORTLISTED FOR THE WATERSTONES CHILDREN’S BOOK PRIZE 2019

‘A witty picture-book with a lot of contemporary relevance, which skewers government propaganda and the misuse of power’ – Little Rebels Children’s Book Award

‘Talented writer-illustrator Emily Haworth-Booth uses just three colours to paint this powerful picture of fear and hope, and the moral of the story will stay with you long after the lights get switched back on’ – Huffington Post UK

An illuminating tale of power, rebellion, darkness and light

There was once a little boy who was afraid of the dark. There’s nothing unusual about that. Most children are afraid of the dark at one time of another. But this little boy was a Prince, and he decided that when he became King, he would do something about the dark.

He would ban it.

When the King bans the dark completely, installing an artificial sun, and enforcing “anti-dark” laws, it seems like a good idea. The citizens don’t need to worry about any of the scary things that might live in the dark.

But what happens when nobody can sleep, and the citizens revolt? Will the King face his fears and turn the lights off?

The King Who Banned the Dark is a beautiful and thought-provoking story about how we need the dark in order to enjoy the light.

BIG CAT

BY EMMA LAZELL

A QUIRKY AND HEARTWARMING HOMAGE TO JUDITH KERR

‘An utterly enjoyable piece of feline fan fiction … an entertaining romp of a story’ – The Herald

‘A classic in the making!’ – LoveReading4Kids.co.uk

The brilliant debut from a rising star of the picture book world, tipped as ‘one to watch’ by The Bookseller magazine.

Isobel’s grandma has lost her glasses and she can’t see a thing without them. While Isobel and Gran are in the garden searching for the specs, they come across a cat. A very big cat. A very big and friendly cat. The big cat moves in with them, much to the disgust of all gran’s other cats. He might be good fun, but he takes up lots of space and eats every scrap of food. Eventually the new cat’s mum and dad turn up, looking for their missing son. And they just happen to have found gran’s glasses too. The tiger family are delighted to be reunited – and gran now sees that she’s been sharing her house with… a tiger!

A heartwarming and surreal romp, packed with jokes and funny details and with an underlying message of acceptance. Emma’s bright colours and brilliant characterisation gives the book the look of a classic from the 1970s or earlier, but with a very modern sense of humour and sensibility.

A striking debut picture book with a jaunty illustrative style and a gorgeous colour palette of vibrant greens, oranges and ochres. A great story to promote discussion in class or at home and perhaps to encourage a spot of guerrilla gardening’ – Books for Keeps

Inside the greenhouse, Bea finds… a giant. A giant made entirely of plants and greenery. Bea is scared, but the giant reassures her and explains that he has escaped from the grey city.

This month marks the 50th anniversary of the first moon landing. On the 16th July 1969, astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins lifted off onboard the Apollo 11 with destination the moon. Four days later, on the 20th July, Neil Armstrong uttered those famous words from the surface of the moon: ‘That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind’. Astrophysicist and author of 50 Things to See in the Sky, Sarah Barker shows how to find the Apollo 11 landing site, without a telescope.

The most accessible wonder of the night sky is our Moon. If you have some binoculars, or a small telescope, you’ll quickly notice that the Moon is full of intriguing details, but even with just the naked eye, you can see some fascinating features – including the area where the first Moon landing took place!

Dark patches on the Moon are called maria or ‘seas’ because early observers thought that’s what they were – dark oceans of water on the Moon. This is not quite right; they were formed by ancient volcanic eruptions that spewed basalt rock over the surface of our dearest natural satellite, but the name remains. One of the most famous of these maria is the Sea of Tranquility. On 20 July 1969, two astronauts from the Apollo 11 mission became the first people to walk on the surface of the Moon. Their landing site was located in the Sea of Tranquility.

  1. Pick a night when the Moon is full and orientate yourself by looking for one of its most prominent craters – the Tycho crater – in the lower part of the Moon (for observers in the northern hemisphere).

2. Next, look for the dark patch across from the Tycho crater that resembles a lobster claw, or perhaps rabbit ears … the main part of this is the Sea of Tranquility.

  1. Draw an imaginary line from the Tycho crater towards the Sea of Tranquility, and the first dark patch you reach is the site of the Apollo 11 landing – people have walked on that spot!

This is an extract from 50 Things to See in the Sky by Sarah Barker, published by Pavilion. Illustrations by Maria Nilsson.
