The theme for the Batsford Prize 2022 is ‘Communication & Connection’

The judges are looking for entries that show innovative and well-crafted interpretations of the theme, in terms of subject or materials used, or a combination of the two. There is no restriction on the medium used, and we accept both entries that have been made as a part of coursework as well as personal work.

Submitting your entry

Entries should comprise:

  • Up to 7 digital images of the work, OR a digital version of a picture book/graphic novel, OR a video (plus optional stills)
  • A supporting statement of up to 500 words (to be included on the entry form). What the judges are looking for in the statement is a bit more information about the work’s media, techniques used, the creative process, inspiration and what the student thinks the meaning of the work is, if any.

Entries will be accepted via Zealous from January 2022. (Link to follow)

File types accepted are JPEG and PDF. For video entries, please submit a link to where judges can view the video online.

You can submit one image of your work or more (up to seven). Examples of additional images to support your entry include close-up details of your work or images illustrating your creative process.

The submitted work should be original to the student and any copyright cleared (if necessary).

Both works created as a part of the student’s coursework and personal works are accepted for entry. Professional works created for clients or due to be published in a professional context will not be accepted.

There’s a limit of one entry per person per category. A work cannot be entered into multiple categories, but a student can enter a different work into a different category where relevant. A series or collection of work will be considered as one entry even if it includes several pieces of work.

We do accept joint entries. The prize will be split between each team member in the case of a winning joint entry.

The last day for entries is 31 March 2022.

The judging process

The Batsford Prize is judged by industry professionals, except for the People’s Choice Award which is voted for by the public from the judges’ shortlist. Shortlisted entrants will be notified in April 2022. The shortlisted work will be displayed in a digital exhibition and the public will be invited to vote for their favourite for the People’s Choice Award. The winners of the Batsford Prize 2022, including the People’s Choice Award will be announced in May–June 2022.
