Bookbinding workshops with LCBA

01/12/2018 11:00 am – 19/01/2019 2:00 pm | Carousel London
The London Centre for Book Arts (LCBA) is an open access studio providing workshop programmes for the community and access to resources for artists, designers and makers. This winter they have teamed up with Carousel London to provide a series of bookbinding workshops. The sessions are taught by book binding experts and LCBA founders Simon Goode and Ira Yonemura, authors of Making Books, out now.
‘Concertina’ Bookbinding Workshop
When: Saturday 1st December, 11am
Where: Carousel, 71 Blandford Street, London W1U 8AB
Price: £40 / £55 (with lunch)
Learn how to make your very own hand-made notebook using the traditional Concertina bookbind. This morning workshop will look into the Concertina method. This method was used for many early Greek texts, it is a folded structure made by simply folding a sheet of paper back and forth in page-width increments. Producing the accordion-fashion book involves folding and manipulating paper using specialist tools to create traditional book structures by hand.
The final product is yours to take home with you and can be used for anything from serious sketches to absent minded doodles. Bookbinding is hungry work, so there’s also the option of lunch in the Carousel restaurant after you’re done.
‘Casebound Notebook’ Bookbinding Workshop
When: Saturday 19th January, 11am
Where: Carousel, 71 Blandford Street, London W1U 8AB
Price: £60 / £75 (with lunch)
Learn the technique of case binding to make your very own hand-made notebook. LCBA will be covering the ins and outs of this traditional method – you’ll learn to fold and manipulate paper using specialist bookbinding tools and create a single section, cloth covered, case bound notebook with a foil blocked title.
The final product is yours to take home and can be used for anything from serious sketches to absent minded doodles. Bookbinding is hungry work, so there’s also the option of lunch in the Carousel restaurant after you’re done.
