Join Author-Illustrator Emily Haworth-Booth for a Weekend of Comics-Making at the 2019 Greenwich Book Festival

15/06/2019 11:20 am – 15/06/2019 12:20 pm | The Clore Learning Space on the first floor of the Visitor Centre at the Old Royal Naval College, 2 Cutty Sark Gardens, Greenwich Peninsula, London SE10 9LW

Come along to the 2019 Greenwich Book Festival’s Creative Family Workshop on Saturday 15th June at 11.20am to meet The King Who Banned the Dark author and illustrator Emily Haworth-Booth who will be guiding participants of all abilities and ages (6 to 106!) through the process of drafting their own one-page comic on the theme of activism. Through discussion and exercises Emily will teach participants how to draw on their own life experiences to create unique and inspiring stories. Emily is the 2019 Greenwich Book Festival’s illustrator-in-residence and will share techniques from her own practice as an award-winning comics artist and educator with ten years’ experience of teaching comics and graphic novels.

You can also catch her later for the Creative Children’s Workshop at 3.30pm which will focus on making your own illustrated story books inspired by Emily’s own picture book The King Who Banned the Dark. No drawing experience or ability required!

The King Who Banned the Dark is a modern fable, steeped in current political undertones and enriched by Emily Haworth-Booth’s illustrations, is a beautiful story about power, protest and balance – in this case the need to have darkness in order to enjoy the light. It has been shortlisted for the Waterstones Books Prize, the Little Rebels award and the Read It Again! Picture Book award. Emily is also working on a long-form graphic memoir for adults. Her short comics have previously appeared in print in the Observer and Vogue.
