Meet ‘Indigo’ authors Kerstin Neumüller and Douglas Luhanko at the Fashion and Textile Museum

02/08/2018 6:00 pm – 02/08/2018 8:00 pm | Fashion and Textile Museum, 83 Bermondsey St, London SE1 3XF

Indigo is one of the world’s most mystical yet widely used dyes and amongst the oldest to be used for textile dyeing and printing. Indigo authors Kerstin Neumüller and Douglas Luhanko will be giving a practical and inspiring talk at the Fashion and Textile Museum, on Thursday 2nd August at 6pm. The textile experts will explore plant to pigment to garment, sharing their passion for this powerful and popular dye.

Including tips and samples of their indigo work the talk will also highlight some recipes from their book, where they have collected a variety of classic and modern dye recipes to suit every skill level and equipment, alongside more environmentally friendly alternatives. There are recipes for both synthetic and natural indigo, accompanied with handy gardening tips for those wanting to start from scratch and grow their own indigo plants.

Kerstin and Douglas will explore indigo’s true potential through a variety of craft projects, ranging from Japanese resist-dyeing techniques (shibori) to embroidery (sashiko) and quilting giving advice on combining indigo with other pigments to create a kaleidoscope of hues.

Indigo: Cultivate, Dye, Create will be available to purchase in the Museum shop.

Kerstin Neumüller and Douglas Luhanko met when Kerstin was looking for someone to dye indigo with and, by chance, stepped into Douglas’s shop on the very day he had ordered a kit for natural indigo dyeing. Since then, they have explored indigo’s possibilities and limitations together. Douglas has a passion for denim and indigo and manufactures jeans in his own company Blue Highway. Kerstin is a men’s tailor with her heart in handicrafts. She has spent many years studying handicrafts and the history of textiles. Together they run the shop Second Sunrise in Stockholm.

The event starts at 6pm with a glass of wine in the Museum foyer and opportunity to view the current exhibition. The talk follows at 6.15pm for 6.20pm in the Fashion Studio and lasts for approximately one hour including an opportunity to ask questions, followed by a book signing in the foyer. Ticket includes admission to the exhibition and guests are welcome to view this before or after the talk.
