Meet Stourhead’s Head Gardener Alan Power at Winstone’s Hunting Raven Books

Join Stourhead’s Head Gardener Alan Power in celebrating the publication of Stourhead, a beautifully illustrated new book published by the National Trust. Alan and his co-author Stephen Anderton (garden writer for The Times) will tell the fascinating story of how this tribute to the classical world – complete with lake, temples, grotto, bridges and monuments of all kinds – came to be created by generations of the Hoare family in Wiltshire.

The story of Stourhead is a fascinating one, as much about the people who created it, as the garden itself. It is a timeless paradise, a landscape garden as breathtaking today as when it was created in the eighteenth century. No other garden from that period feels as complete, so perfectly balanced in its ideas, design and execution, and in the intensity of feeling it induces.

Alan Power is Head Gardener at Stourhead. He has previously worked in some of the most beautiful gardens in the country, notably Mount Stewart in Northern Ireland and Hidcote in Gloucestershire. Alan is a regular contributor on BBC Radio 4 and has worked with the Gardener’s World team for BBC4.

Before turning to writing, Stephen Anderton worked as a professional gardener for over two decades. His column in The Times has won first prize in the Garden Writers’ Guild awards three times. He also writes columns for Garden Inspirations and Garden Answers and contributes to Gardens Illustrated, Country Life, and The Garden. His new book, Lives of the Great Gardeners, was published by Thames & Hudson in October 2016.

Books will be available to buy at the event (cash and card accepted) and Alan will be happy to sign them on the night.
